Wrightsville Beach is about 15–20 minutes by car, Carolina Beach is about 20 minutes, and Kure Beach is about 25 minutes — all close enough for a day trip, easy enough for a full stay.

Late spring and early fall give you mild weather with fewer crowds than peak summer. Peak summer (June through August) means every attraction — the Boardwalk, Fort Fisher, the beaches — is running at full capacity, but it's also the busiest. Downtown Wilmington holds up well nearly year-round since it isn't a beach-dependent stay.
